In May 2022, at the age of 88, Christian Wolff performed once again at AngelicA, nine years after the monographic concerts the festival had dedicated to him in 2013 (documented on the cd album Angelica Music, IDA 030).

Among the greatest and most singular living composers (in 1950, at a very young age, he was already a member of the legendary New York School along with Morton Feldman, Earle Brown and John Cage), for the opening of the thirty-second edition of the festival he presented a world-exclusive program, alongside two of his long-time collaborators, the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky and the drummer Joey Baron, and an Angelica orchestrA of seven electric guitars, made up for the occasion around students and teachers of the Conservatory "G.B. Martini" of Bologna led by Walter Zanetti.
(Angelica orchestrA is the name of an ensemble with variable line-up that the festival has created since 2015 to work on special projects with guest composers).

Spanning over 58 years of the composer’s production, the programme offered on May 7th revolved around Sveglia, a new composition for seven electric guitars commissioned as a world premiere by the festival.

Renowned up to that point as a pianist, it was apparently Wolff’s interest for several rock bands of the time who pushed him to buy an electric guitar in the mid-60s, and the first of his compositions to incorporate this instrument were the three Electric Spring of 1966-67.
In the 2000s he also composed three pieces for solo guitar (two of which were recorded by Sergio Sorrentino, guest of Angelica orchestrA at this time), but he had never composed for an ensemble of guitars only, as on this occasion.

Largely completely notated, but with a series of compositional features left open (i.e. no specification of tempi, dynamics and spacing of musical elements), Sveglia also includes short quotations from other compositions (Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos n. 3 and 6, and a motet by Gombert), “that need not necessarily be noticed”.

The other piece composed specifically for the concert in Bologna (and for one held later in New York, at the space for experimental music from which it took its title) is Roulette, performed by Wolff with Schulkowsky and Baron.
Having met her in 1993, Wolff described Schulkowski as his guide and primary catalyst for the many percussion pieces he composed since then; while Baron, the acrobatic drummer famous among other things for his work with Zorn, has formed a stable duo with the percussionist for over 15 years, and together they have performed alongside Wolff in concerts all over the world.

The three musicians also perform For 1, 2 or 3 People (1964): it is one of his most famous pieces (in 1965 it was also performed by a historic trio featuring Wolff – on guitar – John Cage and Alvin Lucier) and radical in experimenting with types of “open” notations that generate a form of “dialogue”, in real time during the performance, between the composition and the musicians.

Also composed – as For 1, 2 or 3 People – for unspecified instrumentation, Exercise 10 was performed in Bologna by the seven electric guitars of the Angelica orchestrA, accompanied by Wolff on the piano.
Conceived so that no two performances would ever be exactly the same, since each one requires continual and in the moment decisions by each player independently, the series of Exercises (started in 1973 and continued over the years) represents the most famous body of works in Wolff’s production, for which John Cage coined the often-cited description “classical music of an unknown civilization”.

The cd album Sveglia also documents a rendition of the piece recorded during the rehearsals; while Wolff’s performance of Exercise 10 with Apartment House for the 23rd edition of the festival can be found on the cd IDA 030.

A later Exercise, the n. 32 (2011), is performed here by Schulkowsky alone. It consists of 22 parts that can be played in any order, except for the last one. Performed live for the first time by Wolff and Schulkowsky in October 2011 in Berlin, this last version, as the composer described it, is “the best and most distinctive one” of the piece.

On the other hand Percussionist 5, written for one or two percussionists, dates back to 2002, and was performed by the duo Schulkowsky-Baron.

Lastly, Keyboard Miscellany is the generic title Wolff gives to the selections he performs live drawing from a vast collection of short piano pieces, composed as gifts for family members and friends, or as memorial pieces: this album contains three examples dated between 1996 and 2022, while the cd IDA 030 included three other examples, composed between 1988 and 1997.

As Wolff comments in the liner notes of the record:
“In all these pieces the composer's scores, variously open, do not become the music until they are realized by the performers. Composer and performers are equally the source of the music.”

And he added a few days ago:
“And now I've listened to all the music. It sounds fine!
The sound is clear and clean. I have no problems. Will the CD be available for Christmas?”

Nel maggio 2022, all'età di 88 anni, Christian Wolff è tornato a esibirsi ad AngelicA nove anni dopo i concerti monografici che il festival gli aveva dedicato nel 2013 (documentati nel cd Angelica Music, IDA 030).

Tra i maggiori e più singolari compositori viventi (nel 1950, giovanissimo, era già membro della leggendaria New York School di Morton Feldman, Earle Brown e John Cage), per l'apertura della trentaduesima edizione del festival ha presentato un programma in esclusiva mondiale, in compagnia di due suoi collaboratori di lunga data, la percussionista Robyn Schulkowsky e il batterista Joey Baron, e di una Angelica orchestrA di sette chitarre elettriche, formata per l'occasione attorno a studenti e docenti del Conservatorio "G.B. Martini" di Bologna guidati da Walter Zanetti.
(Angelica orchestrA è il nome di una formazione a organico variabile che il festival ha ideato dal 2015 per lavorare a progetti speciali con compositori ospiti).

Abbracciando ben 58 anni della produzione del compositore, il programma della serata del 7 maggio ruotava attorno a Sveglia, un nuovo lavoro per sette chitarre elettriche commissionato in prima assoluta dal festival.

Conosciuto fino ad allora come pianista, pare che fu l'ammirazione per diversi gruppi rock dell'epoca a spingere Wolff a comprare una chitarra elettrica nella metà dei '60, e le sue prime composizioni a inserire lo strumento in organico furono le tre Electric Spring del 1966-67.
Negli anni 2000 ha composto anche tre brani per chitarra solo (due dei quali incisi da Sergio Sorrentino, ospite per quest'occasione della Angelica orchestrA), ma non aveva mai scritto per un ensemble di sole chitarre, come in questa occasione.

In buona parte completamente notata, ma con una serie di caratteristiche compositive lasciate aperte (ad es. l’assenza di specificazione di tempi, dinamiche e spaziatura degli elementi musicali), Sveglia include anche brevi citazioni da altre musiche (i Concerti Brandeburghesi di Bach no. 3 e 6 e un mottetto di Gombert), "che non devono venire necessariamente riconosciute".

L'altro brano composto appositamente per il concerto di Bologna (e per uno tenutosi successivamente a New York, allo spazio per la musica sperimentale da cui ha preso il titolo) è Roulette, eseguito da Wolff con Schulkowsky e Baron.
Da lui incontrata nel 1993, Wolff ha descritto la Schulkowski come la sua guida e catalizzatrice primaria per i molti lavori per percussione che ha composto da allora; mentre Baron, il funambolico batterista celebre tra l'altro per il suo lavoro con Zorn, ha formato un duo stabile con la percussionista da oltre 15 anni, e assieme hanno affiancato Wolff in concerti in tutto il mondo.

I tre musicisti eseguono anche For 1, 2 or 3 People (1964): si tratta di uno dei suoi brani più citati (nel 1965 eseguito anche da uno storico trio formato da Wolff – alla chitarra – John Cage e Alvin Lucier) e radicali nello sperimentare dei tipi di notazioni "aperte" che attivano una forma di "dialogo", nel tempo reale della performance, tra la composizione e i musicisti.

Creato anch'esso – come For 1, 2 or 3 People – per strumentazione non specificata, l'Exercise 10 è stato eseguito per Bologna dalle sette chitarre elettriche dell'Angelica orchestrA, accompagnate dal pianoforte di Wolff.
Concepita in modo che non possano mai verificarsi due performance esattamente uguali, dato che ogni esecuzione richiede decisioni continue ed estemporanee da parte di ciascun musicista in maniera indipendente, la serie degli Exercises (iniziata nel '73 e poi proseguita lungo gli anni) costituisce il più famoso corpus di opere della produzione di Wolff, per cui John Cage coniò la celebre descrizione come "musica classica di una civiltà sconosciuta."

Il cd Sveglia documenta anche una esecuzione del brano registrata durante le prove; mentre la performance di Exercise 10 di Wolff assieme ad Apartment House per l'edizione 23 del festival, è ascoltabile nel cd IDA 030.

Un più tardo Esercizio, il no. 32 (2011), viene qui suonato dalla sola Schulkowsky. Si compone di 22 parti suonabili in qualsiasi ordine, eccetto l’ultima. Eseguito per la prima volta dal vivo da Wolff e Schulkowsky nell'ottobre 2011 a Berlino, quest'ultima versione, ha commentato il compositore, "è la migliore e la più distintiva" del brano.

Percussionist 5 invece, scritta per uno o due percussionisti, risale al 2002, ed è stata suonata dal duo Schulkowsky-Baron.
Infine, Keyboard Miscellany è il titolo generico che Wolff dà alle selezioni che esegue dal vivo tra una vasta raccolta di pezzi molto brevi per pianoforte, composti come regali per familiari o amici, o come dediche alla memoria: questo cd ne contiene tre esempi datati tra 1996 e 2022, mentre il cd IDA 030 ne riportava altri tre esempi, composti dall'88 al '97.

Conclude Wolff nelle note di copertina al cd:
"In tutti questi pezzi le partiture del compositore, in varia misura aperte, non diventano musica finché non sono eseguite dai musicisti. Il compositore e i musicisti costituiscono in parte uguale la fonte da cui scaturisce la musica."

E ha aggiunto pochi giorni fa:
“E ora ho ascoltato tutta la musica. Suona bene! Il suono è chiaro e pulito. Non ho problemi. Il disco sarà disponibile per Natale?”.
